Kevin D.E. Stokesbury flytur erindi á málstofu

Fyrsta málstofa sameinaðrar Hafrannsóknastofnunar verður haldin föstudaginn 9. september kl. 12:30 í fundarsal á 1. hæð að Skúlagötu 4.

Á fyrstu málstofu sameinaðrar Hafrannsóknastofnunar föstudaginn 9. september flytur Kevin D.E. Stokesbury, prófessor og deildarstjóri við sjávarvísindadeild Háskólans í Massachusetts, Dartmouth, erindi um notkun myndavéla við mælingar á botnfiskum við Nýja England, Bandaríkjunum.

 

Erindið er flutt á ensku og nefnist: „A new sampling system for New England groundfish using video technology „

Í erindinu verður rætt um nýjar aðferðir sem notaðar eru og hafa gefist vel við stofnmælingu nokkurra botnfiskategunda við strendur Nýja Englands í Bandaríkjunum. Við mælingarnar er myndavélum komið  fyrir í botnvörpu og þannig er unnt að stækka til muna svæðið sem mælt er á hverju sinni og  safna betri og ítarlegri upplýsingum en þar sem eingöngu er notast við veiðarfæri.

Overfished stocks of groundfish are choking the New England Fishery. While the National Marine Fisheries Service list numerous species as “overfished”, fishermen are reporting that they are plentiful and cannot keep away from them as they try to harvest healthy fish stocks. The contracting distribution of these groundfish stocks into smaller groups as they experience stress presents difficulties for traditional survey methods that sample a relatively small proportion of the sea floor. Working collaboratively with fishermen, we developed a video system that can be deployed in a commercial trawl net, to improve the information on the abundance and distribution of groundfish stocks (focusing on Atlantic Cod and Yellowtail Flounder) by increasing the amount of sea floor sampled per sea day without killing more fish.
