State of the Ocean 2024 report launch 3 June

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) and UNESCO‘s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) will host an open seminar on the occasion of the publication of the State of the Ocean Report 2024. The seminar will be held on Monday, 3 June at 10:00-11:15 in MFRI‘s headquarters at Fornubúðir 5 Hafnarfjörður and will be held in English.
Ocean Decade 2021-2030
IOC UNESCO is responsible for the UN Ocean Decade 2021-2030 with the objective of coordinating national and global research efforts enabling us to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The State of the Ocean Report has the ambition to inform policymakers about the state of the ocean and to stimulate research and policy actions towards ‘the ocean we need for the future we want’, contributing to the 2030 Agenda and in particular SDG 14, as well as other global processes such as the UNFCCC, the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

More than 100 authors from 28 countries contributed to the Report. The different sections provide insights on ocean-related scientific activities and analyses describing the current and future state of the ocean, addressing physical, chemical, ecological, socio-economic and governance aspects.
Iceland supports the creation of the report, which is IOC UNESCO’s flagship publication.
