Marine and Freshwater Research Institute owns and operates two research vessels:
- RV Árni Friðriksson - built in Chile in 2000. 70 m long, 14 m wide, four engines
- RV Bjarni Sæmundsson - built in Germany in 1970. 55 m long, 10,6 m wide, three engines.
A new research vessel is being built in Vigo in Spain. The new vessel will take over Bjarni Sæmundsson by the end of the year.
- RV Þórunn Þórðardóttir built in Spain in 2024. 69,80m long, 13,20 m wide, four engines.
The research vessels are able to operate a variety of fishing gear. They also provide facilities for many other types of sampling and measurements. Shipboard laboratories allow sample analysis and data processing at sea.
