The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) along with a consortium of 22 parties under the leadership of the Icelandic Environment Agency, have received a 3.5 billion ISK grant from the European Union for the LIFE ICEWATER project. The aim of this project is to strengthen and accelerate the implementation of the water framework directive in Iceland. This grant is one of the largest that Iceland has received from a European competition fund.
MFRI focus will be on ocean and freshwater water bodies
MFRI leads one of the project's work packages and participates in numerous other work components. The institute's main areas of focus will be various advice on water issues and the collection of data on freshwater, estuarine waters and coastal waters. There is also emphasis on various outreach efforts.
The project provides an opportunity for innovation in water governance through interdisciplinary collaboration between various parties with the aim of preserving or improving water quality and to maximize the social benefits from such actions. Work on the project will begin in January 2025 and will be completed in 2030.
