The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) in Iceland is seeking a PhD student in Marine Biology for a funded full-time position for 4 years.
Overview of projects and responsibilities:
Research on factors influencing bycatch of marine mammals and seabirds in Icelandic fisheries. Most of the data is already available, but there will be opportunities to participate in fieldwork collecting data for other projects on bycatch of sensitive species. Participation in two EU funded research projects on bycatch of sensitive species. Publication of results in scientific peer reviewed articles and reports. Participation in other research projects within the marine mammal/bycatch team of the institute.
The skills we’re looking for:
Degree in marine biology, statistics, or related subjects. Experience in research in the field of marine biology, and publication results in peer-reviewed scientific journals is an asset.
Experience and knowledge of R is required.
Ambition, initiative, and ability to work independently. Positive attitude, willingness to cooperate and ability to work in a team. Good oral and written communication skills in English. A test of English proficiency might be required. Icelandic language skills are an asset

Further information
Full time fixed term position for 4 years. Salary is according to the current collective wage and salary agreement between the Icelandic Union of natural scientists (FÍN) and Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs.
