Seminar 19 November: Oceanic gyres regulate subarctic marine climate and ecosystems

Hjálmar Hátún, an oceanographer (MSc physics, PhD) at the Faroese Ocean Research Institute (Havstofan www.Hav.fo) gives a talk at the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute 19 November at 12.30 p.m.

The seminar is open to everyone and guests are welcome in the main lecture hall on the ground floor at Fornubudir 5 and at the Teams meeting. See link below.

His lecture is called: Oceanic gyres regulate subarctic marine climate and ecosystems and will be in English.

Short description:

Based on observed water exchanges across the Greenland-Scotland Ridge, I will first revisit the ‘sensitive’ discussion on a possible AMOC slowdown. On this backdrop, focus is, however, on pronounced natural variability in winter convection. This driver influences linkages between the dynamics of the subpolar gyre and Norwegian Sea gyre and temperatures, salinities, nutrient concentrations, abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton, fish stocks, seabird populations and migration of pilot whales. Impact of the open-ocean on the adjacent south Iceland and Faroe shelves will also be illustrated.
