Warsha Singh, an ecologist at the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute’s Pelagic division in Iceland, has been selected to participate at the UNESCO International Day of Women in Multilateralism 2024. The forum takes place 25 January at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.
The theme of the event is: Gender Equality to solve the Climate Emergency. The Day will recognize women leaders in the multilateral system to catalyze a global dialogue on multilateral solutions to gender discrimination that inhibits responses to climate emergencies.
“Climate emergencies are not gender neutral. In fact, the degradation of the planet’s natural systems has a disproportionate effect on women and girls.” .. “The purpose of this Day is to recognize the essential role played by women in the promotion of human rights, peace and sustainable development within the multilateral system. The International Day of Women in Multilateralism advocates for increased representation of women in key decision-making positions that shape and implement multilateral agendas and for ensuring that multilateralism works for women and girls through gender transformative actions and agreements.” About the event on UNESCO´s website.
About Warsha Singh
Warsha Singh holds a PhD in Ecological Modelling and has a strong interest in research and scientific education. She was raised in the Fiji Islands and now lives and works in Iceland; two very different islands which are hit by climate change in a very different way. Her professional background is fisheries data modelling and stock assessment.
Singh’s contribution to the topic of the forum: Gender Equality to solve the Climate Emergency addresses the importance of gender equality in sustainable ocean governance and marine sciences, and the need for policies that recognize the intersectionality of these issues. The unique challenges faced in achieving gender equality in two very different parts of the world where women play distinct roles in marine science will also be discussed.
Warsha’s current research focus is developing a framework for integrated ecosystem assessment for the Iceland waters. She also has experience working for the GRÓ Fisheries Training Programme under the auspices of UNESCO both as a staff member and a student supervisor.
The event will be streamed here.
