We are seeking an Expert in Oceanographic Modeling

Marine and Freshwater Research Institute is seeking an expert in modeling to develop and maintain the institute's oceanographic models and to participate in interdisciplinary work aimed at increasing knowledge about the marine environment and ecosystems. The job primarily involves the development and maintenance of the Regional Oceanographic Modeling System (ROMS), which requires knowledge of the Python programming language, and familiarity with Fortran is also advantageous. Emphasis is placed on the model's application in assessing the environmental impact of aquaculture in Iceland, while the model also plays a crucial role in various oceanographic and ecological research.

We are looking for a solution-oriented individual who is proficient in working both independently and as part of a team.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Development and maintenance of oceanographic models for Icelandic waters.

  • Utilizing oceanographic models to address research questions in oceanography and ecology and to assess the environmental impact of aquaculture and other activities.

Qualifications:

  • University degree in oceanography, oceanographic engineering, physics, mathematics, or programming.

  • Experience in modeling.

  • Knowledge of the Python programming language.

  • Familiarity with the Fortran programming language is an advantage.

  • Good organizational and communication skills.

  • Ambition, initiative, and the ability to work independently.

  • Positive attitude, willingness to collaborate, and the ability to work in a team.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English

Full time position. Salary is according to the current collective wage and salary agreement between the Icelandic Union of natural scientists (FÍN) and Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs.

The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) is a governmental research institute in Iceland under the auspices of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. The institute employs around 190 staff, operates 2 research vessels and has 9 branches around the country, including an experimental research station. The role of the MFRI is to conduct monitoring and research to expand our understanding of marine and freshwater ecosystems, and to provide various science based advice to ministries, other governmental institutes and others to ensure the sustainable use of freshwater- and marine resources in Iceland.

A wide variety of reserch activities take place at the institute, including diverse research on freshwater- and marine ecosystems, aquaculture, and multiple projects in the field of fisheries science. Internal, national and international collaborations are an important part of the operation of the institute. The MFRI is highly regarded in the scientific community and is therefore a valuable research partner, active at an international level with a strong infrastructure and high-quality equipment. The Environmental Division is one of four science divisions at the institute along with the Benthic Division, Pelagic Division and the Freshwater and Aquaculture Division. About 23 staff work within the Environmental Division on physical, chemical and biological oceanography, phytoplankton research, freshwater environmental research and various chemical analysis work.
